Despite the closure of the Bronx Community Pride Center( amid the scandal of former executive director Lisa Winters' alleged embezzlement of the non-profit's funds), we are pleased to announce that

Bronx Pride 2012 Will Take Place!!!

Legendary drag divas Appolonia Cruz & Tyra Allure will serve as hostess and emcee for Bronx Pride 2012, which will feature the following performances and events:

  • The legendary Tym Moss will dazzle us with a live vocal performance.
  • R&B Advanced / Freesyle music performance by Lovari
  • Musical performance by pop singer/songwriter JFortino.
  • Performance and Poetry Reading by actor/poet/artist and SAG/AFTRA member, TAYLOR.
  • Drag performance by international superstar Appolonia Cruz.
  • Drag performance by Tyra Allure.
  • West Indies cultural performance by Zaman from Chutney Pride.
  • Reggaetón musical performance by ICC & J-Alva.
  • Appearance by Mr. Stonewall Cub 2011, Jay Edwards, who will also sing.
  • Drag performance by the legendary Barbie Crawford.
  • Performane by drag king Stefon Royce.
  • Vocal performance by Ronnie Giles.
  • Performance by vocal artist Greg Allen.
  • Salsa performance by salsa recording artist & Bronx native, Amadis (who will be performing songs from his recently-relesaed salsa CD, Deseo Veneno.)
  • Musical performance by pop music sensation, Honda Vega.
  • Drag performance by Michelle Lee Blanco.
  • DJ Mami Cutz will be providing musical journeys throughout the day.
  • Support and words of encouragement from local politicians and prominent members of the community, including
    • Cathy Marino-Thomas - Co-President of Marriage Equality USA, will talk about the state of marriage in New York and across the nation.
    • The Hon. William K. Schmidt - memberWestchester County Human Rights Commission, former member of Peekskill City Council & first openly gay elected Republican public official in New York State.
    • Yetta Kurland, Esq. - LGBTQ & civil rights attorney, and radio talk show host.
    • The Hon. José M. Serrano, New York State Senator, will address the crowd in a show of support for the LGBTQ communities in The Bronx.
    • Detective Thomas S. Verni - NYPD Community Affairs Citywide LGBT Liaison, will talk about maintainig personal safety for LGBTQ individuals
    • The Hon. Michael Sabatino - a born and raised Bronxite, the first openly gay elected official in Yonkers, and marriage equality activist will talk about his first piece of legislation, zero tolerence for work place bullying, as well as the need to help our homeless queer youth.
    • Sandra Turner - Program Manager Palliative Services at St. Ann's Corner of Harm Reduction will talk about drug abuse & prevention, especially as it relates to the LGBTQ community, as well as other services SACHR offers to the community.
    • The Hon. Bill Thompson - former NYC Comptroller and 2013 NYC Mayoral candidate
    • Members of the STONEWALL Veterans' Association, who were present during the Stonewall Rebellion in 1969 that served as a catalyst for the Gay Rights movement and Gay Pride celebrations, including its director, Williamson Henderson.
    • The Hon. Scott M. Stringer - Manhattan Borough President
    • [Others TBA -- no one else has confirmed they'll be attending yet so get on the horn & call their offices & ask why they don't support Bronx Pride and the LGBTQ communities in The Bronx and why won't they be at Bronx Pride 2012! NYS Senator Serrano is the only Bronx politician who has confirmed attendance.]
  • Anti-Violence / Anti-Bullying rally & speak-out -- END THE HATE!!!
    • Representatives from The Trevor Project will be speaking about suicide prevention and anti-bullying measures, with a possible live demonstration.
  • A rally to support the creation of a new LGBTQ Community Services Center for our communities in The Bronx and surrounding areas (upper Manhattan, lower Westchester).

    • Representatives from an Ad Hoc Committee created to form a new LGBTQ community services center in The Bronx will be on-hand at the event to discuss how people can get involved and assist.

Bronx Pride

The Bronx Community Pride Center (BCPC) is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit community services organization committed to organizing, serving, and empowering members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer/Questioning (LGBTQ) communities to enjoy and realize their full potential while providing the support and services they need to thrive.

Among the services BCPC provides are critical, direct social services; cultural sensitivity training; community education; and a home for all LGBTQ-identified individuals, including youth and seniors. These services help promote the health, education, emotional growth, and well-being of the Bronx, northern Manhattan, and lower Westchester County LGBTQ communities. The BCPC provides services in six main areas:

BCPC Youth Services
Designed to foster the emotional, social, educational, and professional growth of our young people and to build the next generation of LGBT community leaders. Programs include:
  • Spot Next Door (providing a safe haven for youth to learn new professional and social skills)
  • Operation Home Base (crisis and clinical case management program for homeless and at-risk youth)
  • Youth Leadership Institute (a twelve-week program designed to foster personal growth and civic responsibility in young people ages 16-24)
  • Youth Advisory Board (youth aged 16-24 maintain an active role in helping to design BCPC Youth Services)
  • Legal Services (a collaboration with the Urban Justice Center’s Peter Cicchino Youth Project, offers free & confidential legal consultations)
 
BCPC Adult Services
BCPC values the leadership and life experiences of the adults and elders in our community. In addition to the following programs, BCPC welcomes you to use our community space to host your own groups, activities, and events.
  • L Group (encourages and builds healthy relationships with ourselves and others, promotes healthy minds, bodies, and souls through lesbian livelihood)
  • HisStory (coming soon)
  • Transgender Support Group (designed for male-to-female and female-to-male trans-identified Bronx residents, discusses a variety of transgender topics, offers case-management and referrals for health services to supportive and experienced providers)
  • Cultural & Arts Programming (cultural and arts programs respond to the needs and interests of our community members include African Drumming & Dance, Yoga, and Hip Hop Dance Class)
 
BCPC Support Services
Support, if you need it, is only a phone call away. The following support services are currently provided by BCPC:
  • Advocacyy/Case Management (provides individual and group counseling to the LGBT community, together with Montefiore Medical Center’s Psychiatry Department, Hunter College School of Social Work, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Mt. Sinai Hospital Department of Psychiatry)
  • Health Link Line (free and confidential telephone crisis and referral hotline (877-553-BCPC (2272)) open from 9:00am to 9:00pm, 7 days a week)
  • Referral Resources (provides referrals to LGBTQ-friendly doctors who have successfully completed BCPC's Sexuality Matters training, as well as referrals to other medical, legal, and social service providers)
 
BCPC HIV Prevention & Services
BCPC offers targeted interventions, community outreach, HIV testing, and referrals to medical treatment, also working in partnership with the Adolescent AIDS Program and the South Bronx Health Center for Children and Families to link all HIV positive youth with quality medical care:
  • HIV Counseling and Testing (Free counseling and testing at BCPC, Monday through Friday, 10am-6pm.)
  • Project SPOT (Prevention Activities and HIV Services, coordinating all major outreach initiatives, including counseling, testing, referrals, and partner notification services)
  • Street Smart Plus (in collaboration with the National Development and Research Institutes (NDRI), aims to increase positive beliefs, attitudes, and perceptions toward HIV prevention through negotiating safer sex by role-playing; mobilizing support for beliefs and attitudes that reinforce safer sex; and engaging in a network which supports positive behaviors)
BCPC Community Outreach & Partnerships
BCPC engages the Bronx community-at-large to increase awareness about the needs of LGBTQ persons and to improve the health and well being of our community:
  • Safe Spot (an outreach initiative recruiting community businesses to publicly display a sticker designating their place of business a Safe SPOT for LGBT youth: a place where free condoms and information about Bronx Community Pride Center programs are continuously available)
  • Bronx Alliance Against Big Tobacco (works with NYC Coalition for a Smoke Free City to recruit LGBTQ and Bronx Organizations, businesses, and cultural/arts centers to effectuate policies prohibiting the acceptance of any monies, goods, or services from the tobacco industry)
  • Sexuality Matters (90-minute workshops for physicians, social workers, healthcare providers, nurse practitioners, psychiatrists, and medical students to increase their cultural competency in the care and treatment of LGBTQ-identified clients)
 
BCPC Cultural & Performing Arts Classes
  • Dance (African Drumming & Dance, Yoga, and Hip Hop Dance Class)
  • Youth Photography (a twelve-week course on professional and creative photography taught by a professional event photographer)
  • Drum Class (learning the Language of the Drum with Ade Harris, influenced by West African and Caribbean rhythms)
